We're turninng our attention to New York this week, as it's the start of Fashion Week. Now we're going to be totally honest here and say most of what we know about the city is all thanks to our favourite TV shows and movies.

In our eyes, it's totally acceptable to take Gossip Girl selfies on the Met Steps, eat cupcakes on the same bench as Carrie Bradshaw and go for an americano at Cafe Grumpy. The following activities might be as 'cool' as hunting down Hugh Grant's blue door in Notting Hill, but we're not above that either. Take a look at our pick of the best New York hotspots made famous by film and TV below...

1. Cafe Grumpy

Cafe Grumpy
Cafe Grumpy

This is the coffee snob’s café in Greenpoint, which, in real life as on Girls, is filled with beardy boys bent over laptops. It’s also where Hannah worked as a barista, alongside the chronically cynical Ray.

2. Dylan's Candy Bar

Dylan's Candy Bar

Dylan's Candy Bar is the Bloomingdales of the sweet world, and was set up by of Dylan Lauren, daughter of the Ralph Lauren. You might recognise this 15,000 square feet candy mecca from Gossip Girl, when Vanessa buys Nate ' one pink can of gummy worms and another of Swedish fish' as a two month anniversary gift.

3. Magnolia's Bakery

Magnolia Bakery

Sex and the City fans still pilgrimage to Magnolia Bakery on 401 Bleeker Street to eat as much icing as physically possible. As for as we're concerned, it was Carrie Bradshaw who invented the cupcake. This place also gets a shout out on The Devil Wears Prada.

4. Bubby's Pie Company

Bubby's Pie Company

Remember when Andy arrives at dinner with a Marc Jacobs handbag and a Bang and Olufsen phone in The Devil Wears Prada? Well that all went down at Bubby's Pie Company, 120 Hudson Street.

**5. Katz's Delicatessen **

The faking it scene from When Harry Met Sally is some of Meg Ryan's best work.  According to their wikipedia page, the restaurant shifts 10,000 pounds of pastrami, 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs each week. Meg is still making New Yorkers go: 'I'll have what she's having.'

5. Il Cantinori

Il Cantinori

Carrie Bradshaw had the worst birthday meal in the history of birthday meals at Il Cantinori. Her 35th birthday was a non-dinner, as no one turned up, she dropped her cake in the street and it all ended with Carrie crying in the shower. On the plus side, the spaghetti looks good.

6. Buddakan

Buddakan

Carrie had a much better dining experience at Buddakan, where she drank bubbly under the chandeliers with her nearest at her wedding rehearsal dinner. If only Miranda didn't corner Mr Big on his way to the loo..

7. The Coyote Ugly Saloon

C'mon we know you've watched this one. But did you know that the bar in Coyote Ugly is an ACTUAL bar?! Just don't ask for water. The bar is called, you guessed it, The Coyote Ugly Saloon.

8. Spoonbill & Sugartown

Spoonbill & Sugartown

Williamsburg’s indiest book shop is where we see Hannah frolicking in the shelves with new man Sandy in Season 2 of Girls. A staffer said to Grazia of its new-found fame, ‘No one really cares.’ That’s so Brooklyn.

9. Cafe Lelo

Cafe Lelo

Meg Ryan has kept another New York cafe afloat thanks to that meet up scene in You've Got Mail. This place now dubs itself the 'most famous cafe in NYC.' They could be right...

10. The Russian Tea Room

The Russian Tea Room

The Russian Tea Room is the place where Serena, Blair and Georgina stage an epic scheme to take down the evil Poppy Lifton in Gossip GirlTootsie, When Harry Met Sally and Manhattan were all filmed here - plus Madonna used to work in the cloakroom.

11. Weather Up

This speakeasy is too cool even to have its name outside. And too cool, it seems, for Hannah Horvath. In Season 1 of Girls, she tells a prospective employer, ‘I object to any bar that calls its bartenders “mixologists”.’

12. Serendipity 3

Serendipity 3

So the chick flick* Serendipity* starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack was pretty terrible, but we still think about that frozen hot chocolate. Serendipity 3 have now renamed where they sat the Star Table.

13. Babycakes Bakery

Babycakes Bakery

What could be more hipster than a vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher bakery? In Season 1 of Girls, Babycakes is where Shoshanna makes a date with an old flame.

14. Tiffany and Co., Fifth Avenue

C'mon, you know you can't go to New York and not do this...

15. And last but not least...THE MET STEPS
