No one would ever have imagined that a young girl spotted in Primark in 2006 would become one of the first black models to grace Prada’s catwalk in over a decade.

Jourdan Dunn made her debut just a year after being scouted, walking in shows for Marc Jacobs and Polo Ralph Lauren among others.

She has since become a household name and worked with brands including Burberry, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent and Victoria’s Secret.

Dunn, who was born in West London, has distinguished herself from other catwalk stars by speaking out about issues close to her heart such as racial discrimination within the industry.

In July 2008 she was chosen by Steven Meisel to appear on the cover of Vogue Italia, an issue devoted entirely to black models. In March this year, she appeared in Net-a-Porter’s ‘The Edit’, speaking of encountering prejudice at castings.

Dunn was named ‘Model of the Year’ at the British Fashion Awards in 2008. At 5 foot 10.5 inches, she admits that she frequently practices walking in very high heels.

More recently, the mum of one has been chosen as the face of Rihanna’s collection for River Island and will feature In Aldo’s Autumn/Winter 2013 campaign.

She’s not afraid to champion the high street either and wowed at this year’s Met Ball in custom Topshop.

Dunn defines her style as ‘street meets chic’, and is often papped in basketball jerseys and beanie hats. She loves to wear black, and her Victoria Beckham dress at this year’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards accentuated her petite frame to perfection.

Whether she’s working the runway in sky-scraper heels or keeping it simple in a blazer and sneakers, JD boasts an effortlessly sleek wardrobe.
