She’s the youngest daughter of Rolling Stone Mick and supermodel Jerry Hall – and now Georgia May Jagger is flying the flag for a new generation by following in her mother’s footsteps as the new face of Thierry Mugler’s Angel fragrance. Here, the 22-year-old model talks to Grazia about her suddenly crazy life...
Georgia May Jagger is devouring a breakfast of eggs and bacon as her flaxen locks are teased into place ready for the cameras. ‘I’m really sorry, I’m going to have to eat it with my hands,’ she laughs, giving the first glimpse of her signature gap-toothed smile. Dressed in a low-key knit, stripy jeans and sneakers, she could almost pass for a civilian – until you take in the peachy skin, feline eyes and pillowy lips and it becomes clear why she’s one of the most successful British models right now. Today’s shoot is particularly poignant for 22-year-old Georgia as it celebrates her new contract as the face of Thierry Mugler’s Angel scent – a campaign her mother Jerry Hall famously fronted 20 years ago. The perfume, created in 1992 with notes of praline, chocolate and patchouli, still ranks in the top 10 biggest- selling fragrances worldwide. ‘It was always the ultimate thing my mum has ever done, so I never expected I would be asked to do it,’ says Georgia. ‘Mum had all these perfumes on her dressing table and I can remember looking at all her precious things when I was younger and being so drawn to the Angel bottle. I think her dressing room still kind of smells of it.’

Having Jerry, 58, in the industry has, Georgia explains, been a blessing. ‘For most models when they start out, this industry is a bit of a shock. Coming from the middle of nowhere with your family having no idea about what you are doing can be tough–but I had my mum and my sister [Lizzie, 30] giving me good advice.’

That advice is key to Georgia’s upbringing and may explain why her family, in contrast to so many others in the spotlight, has stayed so grounded. ‘I wasn’t raised to think that I was any different from anybody else,’ Georgia says, ‘We came from a background where everyone feels lucky for everything we have and we have all learnt from each other and stuck together.’ With four aunts on her mum’s side, a sister and two half-sisters (Jade, 42, and Karis, 43) as well as two nieces (Assisi, 22, and Amba, 18), there’s also a serious sisterhood in the Jagger clan. ‘I was brought up to think that it’s a woman’s job to support other girls and help look after them and not to be nasty or put each other down.’

Georgia is currently living with her mother for the first time in four years – ‘Mum was happy for the first three months, but now she’s a bit fed up of my 50 suitcases!’ – as she prepares to move into her first home which she bought herself earlier this year. ‘The house has been the goal of everything – all the campaigns, all the shows. It’s so nice to feel that there is something to show for all my work. Now I’m just obsessed with decorating it.’
Her wardrobe will be, she says, ‘Prince purple, shiny and very large,’ and will house, ‘a lot of the clothes that I’ve rescued from my mum’s clear-outs as I’m a total hoarder.’ Such finds include vintage Thierry Mugler suits. ‘I’ve got a few great things from Mum – she has more clothes than you can possibly imagine.’

Spending a childhood playing in a closet of fashion gems was one thing, but Jerry also gave her – and childhood friend and fellow model Suki Waterhouse – lessons in catwalking. ‘After a couple of glasses of wine, my mum would start teaching us how to catwalk in the living room. But it would be completely 1980s style with three twirls and a big pose at the end. Shows are so boring now, but at the same time I wouldn’t know how to be like Mum was with all the theatrics. I’d give it a go, though!’

It seems the fashion education paid off as both Georgia and Suki, along with their BFF Cara Delevingne, have enjoyed an incredible career trajectory. ‘It’s crazy, I’ve known Suki since I was 11,’ Georgia says, ‘We were in Year 7 together then school all the way until we were 16. I didn’t meet Cara until later, but we became friends immediately. The last three years have just been mental – we went from all just being together at Glastonbury and now they’re in movies.’ As a girl gang they are ‘pretty relaxed,’ and thick as thieves – Cara and Georgia even have a secret handshake.

As for the pressure on young beauties, Georgia adheres to her mother’s anti- surgery maxims, saying: ‘Once you start messing with your face, it’s hard to go back. Anyway, it’s good to have wrinkles, it shows your experiences. As soon as you’re older than 20, you’re never going to be 20 again, you know? You might as well embrace it and be happy in your own skin, rather than fight something you can never win. That’s Mum’s take on it and I think it’s a pretty good one.’
Wise beyond her years, and with the fash pack’s most fun coterie of mates, GMJ has the world at her feet. And she’s already thinking about life after modelling. ‘I recognise that not everyone has a long career like Mum and to a certain extent I want to be able to do this for now, but then at some point be able to look like s**t every day. Nowadays one passion isn’t enough, is it? I love photography and art and would love to explore that – who doesn’t need to multi-task?’
